Piglet acids
Innovative organic acid products using ‘Citrate Technology’
The antibacterial mode of action of organic acids is well known, understood and documented. The undissociated acid molecule is able to pass through the bacterial cell wall and disrupt its metabolism and reproduction.
In solution, organic acids and their salts exist in equilibrium at their pKa values. Acetic <==> Acetate At pH levels above these the equilibrium favours the salt (non-active antibacterially) At pH levels below the pKa the acid is favoured (antibacterially active). However, modern feed formulations work against this because of the buffering capacity of their ingredients. Chief amongst these is limestone (calcium carbonate) which has a high pH (10) and acid binding capacity (1750). Using ‘Citrate Technology’ can help overcome this. Vitamacid Pig VM4
