Natural bile acids for shrimp production
Bile acids are natures emulsifiers, present in many animal systems to help digest and absorb fats and improve their metabolism. At the same time they help protect the liver and provide important immuno-protection. They also have other important biochemical functions.
The growth process of shrimp is characterized by distinct stages and significant changes in body chemistry and structure, punctuated by molting or the shedding of the complete exoskeleton. Each time this happens there is a major increase in bodyweight.
Molting is controlled by steroid hormones synthesized in the hepatopancreatic system from cholesterol. Strangely, shrimp and other crustaceans do not naturally produce cholesterol and must derive it from their food. Two pathways then compete for cholesterol supply – steroids and bile acids. By supplementing essential bile acids, the negative feedback mechanism spares cholesterol for steroid production. Hence the molting process may proceed unhindered.

Furthermore, the molting stage renders the shrimp vulnerable to disease and predation as the soft, new exoskeleton hardens. It is vital therefore that the process takes place rapidly and efficiently.
